About The Conversion

For more than 100 years, the Kingsport Mill has been a proud employer and community partner in the city of Kingsport and the surrounding area, not only as a large employer, but also a supporter of local vocational education, environmental sustainability and civic and recreational programs that enhance the daily lives for our neighbors.

That tradition will continue for many years to come beginning in the first quarter of 2023 after the mill undergoes conversion from producing uncoated freesheet paper to Domtar’s first packaging facility. The mill will:

  1. Be home to the second-largest recycled containerboard machine in North America.
  2. Be capable of producing and marketing about 600,000 tons of high-quality recycled linerboard and corrugated medium annually, making it the largest recycled manufacturer in all of Tennessee.
  3. Prevent about 50,000 tons of recycling residuals and other byproducts from entering landfills each year by instead using it to produce energy and electricity for the mill.

Repurposing the Kingsport Mill is consistent with Domtar’s long-term strategic plan to build a large and cost-competitive packaging business. As the project progresses, this site will serve as your source for the latest news on all aspects of the conversion as it happens.
